Written in Du’a

Amina had always believed in the quiet power of du’a. She had never been the type to dream of grand romantic gestures or cinematic love stories. For her, love looked like gentle understanding, a shared prayer mat, and someone who would remind her of Allah when the world became loud. So when her mother mentioned that a family had inquired about her, Amina was calm. Not excited, not anxious, just grounded. “Let me pray Istikhara,” she had said, as always. The boy’s name was Zayd. A civil engineer, slightly older, who had returned to Sri Lanka after finishing his studies abroad. His mother had seen Amina at a community workshop where she was tutoring underprivileged children in English and had been quietly observing her ever since. “A girl with adab, not just ambition,” she had told her son. The first meeting was arranged at Amina’s home , in the presence of both families. There was no awkward silence just respectful conversation, tea, and the rustle of intentions being tested. Lat...

Aalia Junaid - The Chef D'oeuvre

Honestly, it’s very tough for a nineteen year old to balance a business and studies both at the same time specially with my A/L’s around the corner but multitasking and time management is key. I have limited taking orders during weekdays since I’m in school. Most of my orders are done during the weekend and studies during weekdays. So I don’t neglect either, I balance both at the same time at least I try balancing both

I am glad that I found the sweetest person with nice qualities, especially in cooking and baking. My friend Aalia would say what is our relationship. “I met Hafsa when doing my A/Ls, she is studying with me in the same class. Hafsa is a humble, down to earth girl and is always a friend who is ever ready to help”. This made me sweet and I loved this indeed. Aalia is a self-motivated girl who is passionate about her work. She makes the amazing recipes mouth licking. She customizes the menu per the customer's desires, which is a fast-growing self- business.

Aalia had the motive to move with bakery because she genuinely loves trying out new baked goodies; it is very therapeutic and makes her so gleeful, she is uncomplaining with the result of how she baked goods look and taste, it is a priority and once the whole thing comes together, it’s the best kind of happiness. The next content is, in our life, we may want to do something or achieve something to be successful yeah! So likewise, Aalia too had the motivation behind her lovely and yummy bakery self-business. Let's look at how’s going to be and she states, ”The one thing that motivated me to start my own baking business was the love I have for baking. On the other hand, I love experimenting with new flavors and trying out new dishes, so whenever I try a new dish I wait for my family to try it out and give feedback and that positive feedback eventually made me want to give outsiders to try my food and that motivated me to start this!”

Life without challenge is unimaginable. Life without challenges is monotonous. A girl who says 50% is for studies and 50% is for her bakery is immense. She does two different things at a very early young age. She mentioned to me that, When the prices of things keep sky-rocketing on a daily basis it is honestly very difficult for a home-baker like me to price a product as I don’t like to keep increasing the prices of my products. Another challenge I have faced as a home-baker is getting the proper ingredients and packing material on time. I’m very particular when it comes to getting ingredients and packing material. During travel restrictions, it was so hard to go to the store, and purchase the items I want, and buying stuff online at the beginning wasn’t easy at all, however, I was able to overcome all this and now I get all my stuff online as it saves a lot of my time”. Amidst the current status core, it is really hard which is a complete chaos for all the business. In terms of baking, it is not really easy to overcome and find solutions.

In my experience, Aaliya mentioned me she also manages with the home objects as a solution. For Example : instead of buying icing sugar, we can grind the sugar at home using a Mortar and pestle, if not a grinder. Today, the tradition plays a vital role in order to achieve minor tasks.

I love this segment before I pull out the topic, every individual is unique and yes it is very well-known. So likewise, creativity is something contrasting on comparison to others, I found myself with Aalia as something special in term of creativity, she has a different style of pursuing things. While speaking about her creativity she thinks that she is very creative also especially when it comes to certain things including baking and other stuff. Aalia is having a creative eye for things like colour, shapes, designs etc.

That creativity helped and still helps her a lot to grow her business and stand out from other bakers. She also like to do things differently and think out of the box. She gave an amazing and fantastic view about her creativity which really gave a nice flavour in my mind! Indeed, this brings out the line where it says that, enjoy every second in your life, to know what is your life about.

I asked Aaliya , “How and why did you start your business?” She said me that,

“From a very young age, I always wanted to start my own business and baking was something I loved doing as a hobby. It all started when I first got my kid's recipe book when I was 8 years old and I started baking for my family. I used to love getting their comments and feedback, and since the response was positive and kept getting better and better I started exploring more recipes and new flavours. I also wanted to share the food I make with people outside my family and get their comments and feedback as well and that led me to start Lia’s Bakes.

I’m very thankful for having a very strong support system and it has always been my family that encouraged me to start this!”

Learning by ourselves is immense and it gives us the potential to be independent and to do our tasks according to our desires. Learning by ourselves gives us more inquisitive to learn and practice. Why I wanted to say this was, that Aaliya is a self-made baker. She said to me that enjoys cooking and when you do that you will end up with a perfect dish.

As a young girl, she manages her studies and extracurricular activities and she said me that, “Honestly, its very tough for a nineteen year old to balance a business and studies both at the same time specially with my A/L’s around the corner but multitasking and time management is key. I have limited taking orders during weekdays since I’m in school. Most of my orders are done during the weekend and studies during weekdays. So I don’t neglect either, I balance both at the same time at least I try balancing both”.

Something fantastic to hear. She has been practicing her customers about her working hours through her social media platform and that is really great in order to get information about the availability of ordering.

Time management is really important to finish a task in a specified period slots. Aalia said me that time management is a KEY. Having a proper plan and allocating times for the work and working according to the plan makes things easy and manages your time beautifully. Although she said she is very bad at time management. She have tried the above method a few times and it worked out perfectly for her. Yet, Aaliya never get de motivated about her passion.

“What would be the message you would encourage, motivate our younger generations?

I strongly believe that it is never too late for anything. Never fear to follow your own dreams. Sometimes, we may have to step out our comfort zone to realize that there is opportunity and potential out there.

If you have a dream to start a business, stop waiting for a sign, just go for it and it's okay if you have some fails along the way. Everyone does!

If anything, I am proud of my small business and everything I have accomplished along the way and you will be too of yours!”

Being natural and finding alternatives is super duper! Let’s us look into how Aaliya buy and make the products for her bakery. She has her supplier that she get her ingredients from and a separate supplier to get bags and all her packing material from. Her cream cheese is sourced from another home business and its homemade – supporting another small business along the way in order to make my product makes her so happy.

The way of managing the products goes as, at the beginning of Lia’s Bakes was honestly a bit difficult especially for a one-woman run business. Eventually with time she learnt how to manage this and now it’s not that hard although things go out of her control at times.

There are people behind ourself who act as a backbone and Aaliya’s backbone and strength would be as :” My biggest support system is my family, they’ve always had my back through the hihs and lows of my business and helped me a lot, to grow and bring my business to how it is today and I’m proud to have an amazing and a strong support system.”

The Menu’s at Lia’s Bakes are :

Regular menu for profiteroles, cupcakes, mini cheesecake and cheesecake jars.

Taking custom orders and catering for her customers needs.

During festivals and celebratory special days (eg: Mother’s Day, Christmas, Father’s Day etc.)

“I put out special range items that will be available only on those days but if the demand is high I consider adding them to our regular menu.”
